First Singaporeans to compete at prestigious MuscleMania World Championships in USA

SINGAPORE - MuscleMania World Championships, the leading open fitness and bodybuilding competitive forum in the USA, to be held in Redondo Beach, California, USA, will see its first Singaporean competitors this year on November 15th.

CJ Phan, Tong Chin Wee and Victor Lee, will make up the independent contingent from Singapore vying for honors at the coveted championships. They will be competing against some of the finest natural bodybuilders from the world.

Switching to a new competitive platform

For CJ and Tong, the move represents a switch from their former affiliation to MuscleMania. The experienced duo, which has been training and competing as a team for 4 years, decided to stop competing under the Singapore bodybuilding federation to accept the challenge of an open competitive platform, MuscleMania, instead. Both CJ and Tong won gold medals for Singapore in their respective body weight classes at the Commonwealth Bodybuilding Championships last year in Calcutta India, and each has won the Singapore Nationals several times.

CJ will compete in the Welterweight Open (under 170 pounds) and Tong the Middleweight Open category (under 185 pounds).

Victor Lee, an aspiring competitive bodybuilder who has not competed before, will compete in the novice category.

From Singapore to USA

CJ has been competing for many years since his teens, and is the co-author of the peer-reviewed book "This Body This Life" (http://www.ThisBodyThisLife.com), a book on health, fitness, nutrition, stress management, and longevity, together with older brother and fellow fitness practitioner Dr. Seamus Phan.

"I am absolutely thrilled and raring to go. I can hardly wait. I have been training half a year for this one and am confident I will place favorably. Competition will be really tough as some of the world's best is out there but this pumps my adrenaline through the roof!" says CJ. "I would like to thank Mr. Louis Zwick, the president of MuscleMania, who took time to fly to Singapore to build rapport and lend encouragement to the Singapore competitors. I have not seen a more amicable person who sees the importance of building rapport with his athletes, let alone the president of one of the largest bodybuilding organizations in the world."

For Tong, MuscleMania represents a new lease of life in his bodybuilding career. "After last year, I really wanted to give up competitive bodybuilding, but I know I have yet to see my peak and that distressed me greatly. I believe MuscleMania will give me another chance for competition, and the event will be featured in mainstream sports TV channels such as ESPN, as well as leading bodybuilding print media. I am looking forward to this event."

For both CJ and Tong, it has been daunting to conform their body weight to the competitive requirements. Each has shed 20 kilograms from their off-season weight. CJ was weighing 97 kilograms and Tong was 104 kilograms during their off-season, and both have to endure a militant dieting regimen to get as muscularly defined as possible.

Victor Lee first saw MuscleMania on ESPN TV, and was impressed by the professionalism and scale of the contest. At that time, he did not know anything about weight training, but was eager to emulate what he saw on TV. "Bodybuilding has virtually no publicity in Singapore, so it is difficult to learn more about the sport. I have been wanting to get into shape long ago and this contest will give me the push to whip myself in shape. I am a newcomer and so far, preparation has been very tough but satisfying."

All three athletes have also expressed deep appreciation for the generosity of the Bronz Tanning Salon (http://www.bronz.com.sg) in Singapore, which takes care of ensuring all three athletes sport a golden tan, essential for accentuating muscularity under harsh stage lighting.
